Burning House Zendo is the home of a Rinzai Zen Buddhist community. Buddhism was founded by Shakyamuni Buddha in India 2,600 years ago. Bodhidharma, one of the teachers who brought Buddhism to China, founded a practice that became known as "Cha'an" in China and "Zen" in Japan. The name "Zen" has remained as the practice has moved to other parts of the world. The form of Zen we practice is named after Rinzai Gigen, a Zen teacher who lived in the ninth century C.E. Our style of practice is based on the tradition of Dai Bosatsu Zendo, a monastery in the Catskill Mountains of New York.
